Weekly top 25, possible NSFW edition

The second full weekend of college football brought a surprising amount of good games for so early in the season. Sad to say but i think we are looking at a down year of college football in that there are a lot of average teams that can beat each other at any time. That being said there is some movement in the top 25 this week and i must say there are a lot of teams near the bottom who i don't think are very good.

Anyways, regarding last weeks game with Akron there were decent signs of improvement in my opinion. We looked better but there was a ton of corrections that still need to be made to be a championship caliber football team. I was actually much less upset about the effort against Akron than i was against YSU. I think the rain which fell heavily for the first quarter had a greater impact on the sloppy play than people are giving it credit for. So with that my thoughts from last week......
THE GOOD

• The D-line set a strong tone up front and the defense on the whole dominated. This is a very good thing and i hope that they are starting to develop an attitude that represents a silver bullet defense.
  
• The kicking game looked very solid and at least that's one less thing to worry about.
  
• We won. We won at home. We took care of business. I'm stretching here I really thought there was some other good stuff but nothing really stands out.
  

THE BAD

• 5 fucking turnovers? is that serious? 5 turnovers against anyone and you are lucky to win.
• The O-line. Their play was better but I still don't see Boone or Rehring dominating the way they should be. I think song of the long runs broke late in the game were a result of akron being tired.
  
• shitty short passes. I hope these are just the result of being careful early in the season but they were pretty much awful all game. The short dump off to Nicol isn't going anywhere and it's not going to go anywhere all season. Brandon Saine made a great catch on a throw that could have gotten him killed.
  
• Todd Boeckman's arm strength. I was concerned about this last week and am now even more concerned. 2 picks on terribly underthown balls, this is not a good habit.
  

anyways i'm pretty pumped for this week's game. I don't think its going to be as close as I have heard some people suggest recently and think the bucks can get a pretty easy victory. Regardless, it will be a nice test on the road and i expect to see the offense open things up a bit or at least perform much better. I'll say a final score of Ohio State 34- Washington 9

So the first week of college football is over and it proved to be fairly eventful. I was planning on making this post much longer and previewing this weeks games, but I lazy and thus will only cover the events of week one. The biggest story being the M*ichigan upset, which I'm still kinda shocked by. So much has been written about it I don't realy want to dwell but I'll add a couple of things. 1) Lloyd Carr isn't being fired, if you need reassurance of this read Michael Rosenberg's article in todays Detroit Free Press. 2) It was going to happen to someone eventually 1-aa teams have been getting better, I would venture to say App State could win the MAC if they had the full 85 scholarships those programs get, nonetheless its humiliating and a total embarrassment to a team that appears to be full of shitty losers.

The Good

• We played a lot of guys, and the freshmen skill players get to get their feet wet in a non-pressure situation
• We didn't lose
• We Didn't have to show too much, or at least I hope we didn't
  
• Robo proved ( I think) he can be a go to reciever.

The Bad

• Our O-Line sucked ass, seriously it has to get much better or we are losing 4 games.
• Beanie Wells- he is supposed to be the star of this team i would like to see him perform as such. this might have something to do with our shitty o-line play.
  
• Lawrence Wilson injury sucks bad...Rob Rose this means you have to be productive, please do so. Alex Barrow has also been here for like 10 years if he could add any production here it would be huge.
  
• Todd Boeckman- I'm not saying he was terrible, because he wasn't but he has some major room for improvement. He clearly separated himself from the other QBs if he hadn't already, but the fumble sucks even if it wasn't his fault entirely. Some of the deeper balls he threw kinda hung up in the air which scares me greatly, Robo made some great catches to bail him out, but I want to see crisper, stronger throws this week.
• I got a really bad sunburn on my face while sitting in A deck.

In case you haven't heard, Karen Holbrook is a cunt. Best part is that it was at an interview for Florida Gulf Coast University.

The rankings are factored to include a team's schedule, so although i think team A might be better than Team B- I believe these are what the rankings will look like at the end of the season.

They are probably biased but I can't really care about that. There is just something I hate about USC, and I remember they were a very beatable team last year. As for LSU this year I get the feeling they either won't lose a game or somehow drop 3 or 4. It's interesting looking over the teams this year it's the first time in 3 years that one team hasn't stood out as being better than everyone else to start the season.

I'll throw in some heisman predictions here, but I must admit I'm usually terrible at this. I think i picked Chris Simms to win it 3 years, and two years ago I predicted Chris Leak. My pick last year was Dwayne Jarrett- don't ask me why- I think I was just afraid of jinxing Troy Smith. So with that being said my picks for this year are.....

Allow me to introduce myself...

They call me Meanie, although only on this blog, but I hope I can occasionally live up to the name. I am a recent graduate of The Ohio State University, thus a lover of all things buckeye. Well maybe not all things, but you get the idea. Enough about me, let’s get down to business.

As you should know this weekend marks week one of College Football. Unlike those who are not fans of playing D-IAA Youngstown State I will thoroughly enjoy the curb stomping that the Penguins should endure come Saturday.

A couple half assed predictions for the game:
1. Beanie Wells 20 carries for a modest 140 yards and 2 TD’s before getting pulled at the half
2. Mo Wells scores his first TD from more than 25 yards out.
3. OSU D forces at least 4 turnovers.
4. Larry Grant decapitates the YSU QB. (Ok maybe not, but a vicious hit will do)
5. Angry Hilljack’s storm the new Time Warner office when they realize the game isn’t on TV.

Score Prediction: OSU 48- YSU 3. I don’t think Tressel tries to run up the score, but it just can’t be helped.

Big Ten Network and other stuff

This is my first post here so I might have to work out some kinks. Anyways, I emailed Gene Smith yesterday about the situation regarding the Big Ten Network and here is the response i got today. (apparently he passed the email off to Steve Snapp, but thats fine)

Gene Smith has asked me to respond to your email. You make some very
good points and you are absolutely correct, this is a very difficult
situation. But the Big Ten and the Big Ten Network are trying hard to
resolve it in order to make all of our games available to our fans. At
this point, it does not look as though we are going to have anything in
place for the first two games, but we are optimistic that down the road
we can come to an agreement. All of us hope that will be sooner rather
than later. I am not sure who you cable provider is, but it won't hurt
to give them a call and let them know you would like to have the Big Ten
Network on you cable package. In the meantime, though, your only option
is DirecTV. Keep in mind, though, that negotiations are going on daily
and things could change quickly.

So there that is, pretty much what I expected. All it means is that for those of us without DirecTV we're not going to be watching the first couple of games unless we attend them in person. On a somewhat unrelated note I had to cancel my Time Warner service today and talked with one of their charming customer service reps about the BTN. She really couldn't add anything i hadn't heard before, but it was clear that Time Warner had prepped them for calls on the issue.

C U Next Tuesday Mark Silverman, or whenever my cable company picks up the Big Ten Network

I must admit I'm a little shocked at the amount of people siding with the Big Ten Network on the issue. While I understand the benefits of the network (more money, better promotion of other varsity sports) I'm totally pissed at the way the Big Ten has handled the issue. The public fight with cable companies is embarrassing as is the last minute feel of everything involving the network launch. Both sides need to come to a compromise- or the only person who loses is the fans and alumni- which is becoming all too typical in big time college athletics.

Hearing Jim Delaney on the radio today it sounds as if things aren't close to reaching a head. My guess would be things are not resolved until after the season, but I think Time Warner will budge before Comcast. This whole situation could be resolved much better if a la carte cable existed or if there was legit cable competition in cities, but that is just not the case and probably never will be.

This is the first post on this new blog as you can plainly see. I'll take a moment to explain the purpose and intent of this blog. I'm, as you could probably tell, a die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes fan.
